He ought to consider retrofitting it to be a natural pool. He’ll have to cordon off an area to build a wetland filtration area (or dig out a new space) but it would be a solution to how much chlorine he has to put in. And once you get the pump to filter through there nature cleans itself.

Pool tech here, please don’t over stabilise the pool as most tabs use chlorine/acid/stabiliser. Over stabilising the water will render the chlorine useless and algae will grow no matter how much chlorine you use.
